We would again like to wish all of our clients and their families a happy and successful year for 2006. We thought we would put together our normal annual news update on what we are all up to at the present time. There have been a few new arrivals, Murphy, a traditional piebald cob, is currently under training to use at a later date in the school and he will probably do a bit of showing and dressage in the coming year. Nantconwy Anamal, otherwise known as Malcolm, our Welsh Section D Stallion, arrived in the spring and is currently running with a couple of mares, so we are expecting to see some ‘Mini Malcolms in the summer. He will also be doing a bit of dressage in the New Year. Some of you may remember Shadow left us last year to go back on the show jumping circuit. Due to her current owner outgrowing her, she’s now back with us. Her new jockey, Daisy is learning to ride on her at present. All the other horses and ponies have been working hard on the yard taking most of you around Exmoor on hacks or having lessons in the school. This year we decided to run a Show Jumping Club in the summer evenings, which turned out to be great fun for all. It was great for us to see the riders really come on in leaps and bounds in a very short time. We finished the season with a jumping competition, everyone became very competitive and were very determined in the jump off to beat each other on the clock! Our Progressive Test mornings on Saturdays have been another success. This has brought the children back on to the yard, not only to have their riding lessons, but to learn about day to day horse care and being introduced to the Health and Safety issues that now seem to rule our world!!!!!!!!! Shelley is now back fully in action after a broken femur at the end of last year and catching up for lost time, we are now madly chasing national qualifiers after missing the finals last year. Two of our most regular girls, Catherine Dixon and Sarah Draper have now moved on to University. They have been with us for the last 7 years, Sarah rarely ever missing a lesson and Catherine helping with the horses and their training, and teaching and assisting with clients, we will miss their regular weekend input, although we still hope to see them regularly during the holidays. We have just heard that Catherine has just been chosen for the university show jump and dressage team’s which is great news. We must congratulate Katie Thompson, (who has helped for several years on the yard on Saturdays) and our son Oliver, (who maintains our computers and website), both achieved great results in their University degrees this year. Also congratulations to Abby, Hannah, Catherine and Shelley for achieving their various qualifications and upgrades throughout the year. A welcome to Charlie Chugg who is working towards her horse and teaching exams with us at present on a part time basis and to Shelley McLeod who is diversifying her horse / exam training with work experience and has also been assisting on the yard for a couple of years. Sue attended various courses this year and achieved her qualification to be a trainer for Riding and Road Safety. Having achieved this and Dean having been assessed for its suitability, we are now an official centre for doing R& RS courses. We will let you know if we will be running any in the near future. Our staff, who have all worked hard through the year of broken legs and operations, are still with us and all can be seen inside the card you have hopefully received. The horse and pony on the front cover were probably instantly recognisable as Worthy and Masie. We have had quite a few guests from abroad this year, from as far away as the USA, Dubai and Australia. We are very pleased to hear that Debbie and Heather from New Orleans, although badly affected by ‘Katrina’, are both fit and well. Next time we see them they’ll certainly have a story to tell. We have increased the amount of liveries on the yard and are now currently full at the inn. We offer full, schooling and occasionally working livery by arrangement. Our liveries gain use of our facilities with all year part time turnout and the hacking around here is stunning resulting in happy horses and riders. Our staff are also available for assisting with the horse and / or rider training. For the clients our additional hacks have proved very popular, particularly the coastal route, which takes you across the clifftop at Holdstone. Mini Dean has been very successful this year again. More people are returning to get their North Devon ‘fix’. Whether it is just to enjoy the countryside or just improve their riding. Some of you are also staying in the larger accommodation in the farmhouse, where additional members of your family or friends can stay even if they don’t ride. Please give us a ring if you wish to stay. We have already taken several bookings already for 2006 so don’t leave it too late. We will also be doing B and B by arrangement or request, I just have to make sure we are not at a show at the important time! A new thing we are considering, is offering house parties with riding included at off peak times. It would mean 4 to 8 people wanting to join, arriving Friday morning, having lunch followed by an afternoon ride, evening meal, chill out in front of the log burner. Saturday and Sunday riding programme, departing Sunday evening. We will do all the catering, I’m a fully qualified Cordon Bleu chef and ex teacher and this was one of my best kept secrets until now! If anyone is interested in joining one of these parties, please email or phone me. I will be putting details and sample menus on the website, the riding will be as per the tariff. Once again, have a great Christmas and best wishes for the New Year! We look forward to seeing you in 2006! Kind regards, Tracy and the team at Dean. Ode to the Horse. Where in this wide world can man find nobility without pride Friendship without envy, beauty without vanity? Here, where grace is laced with muscle, And strength by gentleness confined He serves without servility, has fought without enmity, There is nothing so powerful, nothing less violent, There is nothing so quick, nothing so patient. England’s past has been borne on his back. All our history is his industry. We are his heirs, he is our inheritance. THE HORSE I think we should thank our 4 legged friends for the pleasure they give to so many different levels of riders, without them and their patience, it wouldn’t be Dean. |
